The Suicide of LeAnn Leutner BY ELIZABETH STUART

The Suicide of LeAnn Leutner Lincoln Edward Amory Leutner-Sporn crawls across the multicolored carpet, ignoring a pile of blocks and a stuffed animal and heading straight for a thick psychiatry text. Chubby, with a round face and sandy blond hair that's parted and neatly combed to the side, he paws through the pages of the book, clumsily opening and closing it with dimpled hands. His father, Dr. Jonathan Sporn, a director of clinical research for the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, chuckles as the baby abandons academic pretense and shoves the book in his mouth. At 55, Sporn has white hair. He has kind eyes and a crooked smile. "If he eats it, that's a good sign," he jokes. "That's the biggest tribute Lincoln gives." Spo... more >>

Big Snow Buffalo Lodge Shutters After Co-Owner Yoni David Is Shot BY DALE W. EISINGER

Big Snow Buffalo Lodge Shut... In the west wing of Bellevue Hospital, Yoni David sits dazed in a hospital bed. His shattered left arm is in what the doctor calls an elevation dressing, a cheesecloth-like tube that keeps his hand raised. He's been here since he was shot at the Bushwick DIY arts venue he co-managed, Big Snow Buffalo Lodge, on July 17. He'll spend his 24th birthday in this bed. The hospital staff just transitione... more >>

Home on BK Grange's Urban Organic Oasis BY HANNAH PALMER EGAN

Home on BK Granges Urban Or... It's around 7 p.m. on the hottest Friday in recent memory. I do as sh... more >>

The Spectacular Now Is This Summer's Best Romance BY ALAN SCHERSTUHL

The Spectacular Now Is This... Hey, Hollywood can still do romance! Even since the marketeers worked out that the kiss kiss bang bang formula could be profitably split, with bang bang movies getting wide releases and the kiss kisses sold only to that slim niche demographic called "American women," movie love stories had gotten frustratingly rote and maudlin, the passions of Nicholas Sparks's characters taken as the given that... more >>

Heavy Hitters: Damn Yanquis and Cartoon Vampires BY R. C. BAKER

Heavy Hitters: Damn Yanquis... The camera pans across battered cinder-block walls, a muddy infield, concrete stands shorn of awnings, and palm trees silhouetted against gray skies. On the soundtrack, an old-timer reminisces in Spanish about his days on a Cuban baseball team: "Nobody could beat us! Do you remember the game with the Yanquis?" Our perspective sweeps over the deserted field as he recalls a tough American pitcher s... more >>
