After Hurricane Sandy, Verizon Takes Hostages BY TESSA STUART

After Hurricane Sandy, Veri... "I've been on the phone with Verizon all day," says Jason Little, the tan, sinewy owner of the popular Fire Island haunt Bocce Beach. The restaurant's phone and Internet are down. Little made an appointment, a customer service rep scheduled it, but it doesn't matter. He knows Verizon won't show up. "They never come." The same thing happened last week. And three weeks before that. Sometimes service will come back on its own, but until it does, Bocce Beach can't process credit cards. Losing that ability would hurt any small business. But on remote Fire Island, where there aren't many ATMs and the few that exist charge huge premiums, it's a major blow. Music Festivals Are Environmental Disasters BY KATIE BAIN

Music Festivals Are Environ... Beyond good vibes and heady memories, a primary export of U.S. music festivals is garbage. And between the heat and the calves, you're going to need to cool off, you pervert. To that effect, chilled soups work double duty, providing respite from the heat while filling you up, and they're usually a great way to highlight the bounty of summer produce. Lucky for cold soup fe... more >>

Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine Returns to a World That's Not Quite Earth BY STEPHANIE ZACHAREK

Woody Allens Blue Jasmine R... For anyone who's been going to the movies at all regularly over the past 45 years, Woody Allen is practically family. His movies may draw fewer passionate responses than they did in the '70s and '80s, but we still feel compelled to reckon with him. Whenever Allen comes out with a new one—which he continues to do with alarming frequency—those of us who still care even moderately may a... more >>

Outrageousness: Now Too Big to Fail BY CHRISTIAN VIVEROS-FAUNé

Outrageousness: Now Too Big... There's nothing more stubbornly middle-of-the-road than shock art. Like inflexible suburban Baptists and food co-op rules committees, purveyors of this trying trend insist on viewing reality in stark black and white. Such a worldview mistakenly invests cultural symbols with magical powers they will never possess: among them, the ability to turn so-called normal behaviors into their radical opposi... more >>
