The voice of Jose Santiago, longtime news director at the legendary radical radio station WBAI, drifted out over the airwaves for what would be the last time. "Over the years, I've knocked out last-minute news copy at breakneck speeds thousands of times, in a whole bunch of different places, and always made the deadline," Santiago told listeners. "But this one, on such short notice, is not flowing so easily." Earlier that afternoon, Summer Reese, interim executive director of Pacifica Radio, which owns the station's broadcast license, had gathered WBAI's staff together and confirmed rumors that had run rampant for months. Girls Against Boys Version 2.0 BY MICHAEL ALAN GOLDBERG

Girls Against Boys Version 2.0 The last time I heard Scott McCloud's voice on the other end of the phone it was in 2002. Mayoral Candidates Vie for Food Cred BY DEENA SHANKER

Mayoral Candidates Vie for ... For those living near one of New York City's 54 Greenmarkets or with access to one of the 800-plus school and community gardens or dozen-plus urban farms, you can hardly swing a reusable tote without knocking over some kind of "local" food. But most of what New Yorkers eat doesn't come from nearby. According to a 2008 study of the city's food supply, even if the entire state's agricultural produc... more >>

Smug Parents Get What They Deserve in Hell Baby BY STEPHANIE ZACHAREK

Smug Parents Get What They ... Smug, gentrifying white people having babies: Making fun of them never gets old. Yet relatively few movies are devoted to this highly amusing blood sport. Enter Hell Baby, written and directed by Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon. With this story about a beaming, expectant couple who just may be giving birth to the spawn of Satan, Garant and Lennon, both veterans of The State and Reno 911!, ar... more >>

Four-Color Revolution BY R. C. BAKER

Four-Color Revolution In his introduction to this superbly illustrated compendium of underground newspapers, editor Geoff Kaplan channels the 1960s' exuberant ad-hoc vibe by referring to his book as "Power of the People," despite the title on the cover—Power to the People. The more inclusive of offers insight into the cultural power exuded by the 700 color reproductions gathered here, all culled from papers publ... more >>
