The other crouched to hold the young man, pleading with him to keep his eyes open. They knew this kid. Most everybody at the Redfern Houses in Far Rockaway knew Ramel Gittens. His friends called him "Rowdy." The square-jawed 19-year-old had a life-of-the-party way about him. Gittens had been a star running back and point guard at Far Rockaway High School. The Graying of Hip-Hop BY CHRIS O'SHEA

The Graying of Hip-Hop Andre Young is 48 years old. Gary Grice is 46, and Shawn Carter? Forty-three. O'Shea Jackson is 44 and Tariq Trotter is 41. Rippers Sets Sail Again After Sandy BY SCARLETT LINDEMAN

Rippers Sets Sail Again Aft... Like the Peach Pit, The Max, and Cheers, the perfect hangout spot with good friends, the right soundtrack, and decent chow may be as fictional as the places we've created in our collective cultural imagination. Rippers, a burger shack on the boardwalk at Rockaway Beach, aspires to be that kind of chimerical destination: a spot whose vibe is all hoots, high-fives, and the occasional beer bong. Ri... more >>

Lake Bells In a World... As... Lake Bell can do incredible things with her tongue. She can touch her nose, twist it to both sides, and fold it backward as flat as an omelette. In a studio in LA's Silver Lake neighborhood, recording vocal exercise warmups for an online campaign promoting her directorial debut, In a World…--a comedy about cutthroat voiceover artists, which debuted at Sundance and opens August 9--Bell put... more >>

Abstraction: The Sequel BY R. C. BAKER

Abstraction: The Sequel Ahhh, the '80s: Reagan was in the White House, Thirtysomething was on the tube, and Julian Schnabel's retrospective was at the Whitney. But the decade wasn't all bad. Early in curator Raphael Rubinstein's insightful essay for this group exhibition, David Reed, one of the included artists, points out, "It amazes me that in New York there's a history that painters know, a street history of paintin... more >>
