Target Shooting a Major Cause of Arizona Forest Fires BY RAY STERN

Target Shooting a Major Cau... Gary Hanna's cruising through the desert wildlands east of Phoenix in his white SUV, hunting for shooters. On this warm early morning in late June, the forest ranger is one of several state and federal officials patrolling the southern Tonto National Forest on the lookout for one of the most frequent causes of wildfires — people shooting guns. It's the reason behind as many as 31 Tonto fires since 2009, authorities say. Signs posted at the dirt-road entrance to the Tonto off Beeline Highway warn of fire restrictions (lifted as of July 17 for this season) that include a ban on target shooting, but it's easy to miss them. Even when people learn of the restrictions, they don't always a... more >>

Three Woodstock Veterans to Honor the Heroes in Flagstaff BY CALEB HALEY

Three Woodstock Veterans to... Even more than 40 years later, no musical period is more influential to today's rock 'n' roll than the '60s and early '70s. Young bands on modern Top 20 radio may not be able to cite a single artist from the 1960s, but it's still there in their influences from the '90s, even if they're unaware of the music that shaped their own ideas of originality. The Act of Killing Is a Masterpiece of Murder and the Movies BY NICK SCHAGER

The Act of Killing Is a Mas... More terrifying than any horror film, and more intellectually adventurous than just about any 2013 release so far, The Act of Killing is a major achievement, a work about genocide that rightly earns its place alongside Shoah as a supreme testament to the cinema's capacity for inquiry, confrontation, and remembrance. To dub Joshua Oppenheimer's documentary a masterpiece is at once warranted and y... more >>

Sesame Street Without the Sass (and Not Much Bert) at Arizona Science Center BY ROBRT L. PELA

Sesame Street Without the S... I was too old for Sesame Street. When it debuted in November 1969, I was in the second grade, and this oddball educational show wasn't yet a groundbreaking, game-changing cultural touchstone. It was a brand-new public TV kiddy program aimed at 3- to 5-year-olds just learning their ABCs. I already knew the alphabet; in fact, I'd recently gotten in trouble with my homeroom teacher, Mrs. Jorgensen... more >>
