Political Corruption Boils Over in Albany BY GRAHAM RAYMAN

Political Corruption Boils ... Shirley Huntley labored in relative obscurity for a decade on a local school board in Queens before she made the jump into state politics in 2006, challenging the machine incumbent, Ada "The Wild Woman of Albany" Smith, for a senate seat in the 10th District. Smith, by then, had been embarrassed by a series of reports about her conduct toward staff—the legislature had reprimanded her for screaming at her aides, and she had even been convicted of throwing coffee at one of them—but still, few thought Huntley would beat her, since Democratic machine incumbents are almost assured of victory. And yet Huntley did win, by a narrow 102 votes, and came into office touting plans to focus... more >>

Finding Hip-Hop's Beginning in Afrika Bambaataa's 40,000-Deep Record Collection BY BRETT KOSHKIN

Finding Hip-Hops Beginning ... Endless rows of brand-new white cardboard boxes stacked chest-high greet you as you walk into Gavin Brown's Enterprise, a posh art gallery on Greenwich. An amber-haired archivist in his early 30s gingerly scans the contents of one the boxes, fishes out a vinyl record, and hands it to me. It's a dog-eared and dusty copy of the Shaft in Africa soundtrack, the last in the trilogy of films, largely f... more >>

Culinary Crossroads at Cafe Kashkar BY JAMES A. FOLEY

Culinary Crossroads at Cafe... Peek through a little archway inside Cafe Kashkar in Brighton Beach, right above a glass display case filled with casserole dishes containing pickled salads and marinating meats, and you might see embers exploding off the coal-fired grill as seasoned kebabs of lamb and chicken are charred around the edges until juicy. Cafe Kashkar gets its name from the city of Kashgar, a historic trading outpos... more >>

Joshua Oppenheimer on The Act of Killing BY RAILLAN BROOKS

Joshua Oppenheimer on The A... Though director Joshua Oppenheimer filmed in the late '00s, the story of The Act of Killing begins in 1965, with General Suharto's overthrow of Indonesia's first post-colonial government and the subsequent purge of ethnic Chinese, Communists, and intellectuals. To distance itself from the genocide, the government created by the coup turned to Pemuda Pancasila, a paramilitary group, to carry o... more >>

Llyn Foulkes' Art Is a Visionary Spectacle BY CHRISTIAN VIVEROS-FAUNE

Llyn Foulkes Art Is a Visio... Outsider art is the new blue-chip art. Or so various New York insiders would have you believe. From this summer's Venice Biennial (curated by the New Museum's Director of Exhibitions Massimiliano Gioni) to yards of boosterish column inches in the normally dry-eyed New York Times, a consensus has been reached that declares "Art Brut"—artist Jean Dubuffet's raffish euphemism for insane-asylum... more >>
